I went to Penn Orthopedics for a pain issue with my left thumb. After talking the Xrays at Penn Medicine building, I was examined by the head of the department who analyzed the issue as an arthritis of the base of the thumb. He also said that there was not much that can be done for this condition and if I want I can go to one of the therapy providers who can provide a neoprene splint to wrap around the hand. As Good Shepherd Penn Partners were right at site at 3737 Market Street Penn Medicine building, I made my appointment to see a therapist. On November 10, 2016, I saw a therapist who spent a maximum of 45 minutes asking questions and writing down the answers (called an evaluation per Good Shepherd). Then she pulled out a neoprene wrap and gave it to me. For these services, Good Shepherd billed AETNA a total of $1071.00. The payments and adjustments were shown as $966.04 (of which AETNA paid about $500). Good Shepherd billed me remaining $104.96. When I questioned the charges, I left a voice mail several times to Good Shepherd and finally was able to get through to them after 5 tries. Then I was referred to Robert Lavelle (spelling?) at their Penn Med office and when I reached him, his explanation was simply that we bill all insurances the same and that is our contract with AETNA and my charges are as negotiated per AETNA contract. So, in short, pay the money and shut up. If this is how a health provider services and cares for a patient where there is no value for the price charged by them, our healthcare system is in a serious jeopardy. I know this one review is not going to make a difference or improvement to Good Shepherd's financial well being or practices. However, I will never ever use GOOD SHEPHERD again and I question Penn Medicine using them as their partners. My recommendation to other patients is to use other physical therapy providers. I wish I could give Good Shepherd a 0 star rating but the minimum allowed is 1. In summary, consider a therapist writing down notes on her notepad for 45 minutes by questioning you and then charging $1000 for the work. No exercises, no use of equipment, just a writeup and a sheet of paper. Not a bad paying job. DO NOT USE GOOD SHEPHERD. The name is a misnomer.
"Horrible" is the most suitable word to describe this Good Shepherd Penn Partner therapy place. They are greedy, deceiving, relentless when it comes to ripping the patients off.
I wish I had gone here instead of the Penn Center for Rehab & Care which is full of racist and bigoted staff that hate white people.
