Amazing food and outstanding service in a cozy atmosphere. When we made our reservation, the staff asked if it was for a special occasion. We said it was for our anniversary. When we sat down, our waitress immediately told us happy anniversary and poured us some complimentary champagne!
The wine-by-the-glass prices seemed high, but when Rich poured them, we understood. Very good pours.
We've been to Vernick 3 times in the last 3 years and it is always an amazing meal. Whatever you order will be fantastic and presented nicely. The atmosphere is cozy. I had my graduation dinner here and my family loved the meal (high standards). Make sure you make reservation far in advance though...we booked easily a month before going, rarely was there anything available within 1-2 weeks during a prime time.
Vernick offers the Rittenhouse area an outstanding and highly dependable and repeatable dining experience. The menu is phenomenal and if you can score a table upstairs facing the open air it's not to be missed. Book early and take any time available to you; this is a beautiful place.
We had a great time here. Service was just right. We each had a "Toast": the smoked trout and the beef tartare. Both were very good. They were bigger than we thought. Then we shared a small plate with duck prosciutto and pasta. It too was wonderful and was very zippy. We asked our waiter, Rich (great guy) what gave it the spiciness and he said it was jalapeños. The plate was excellent but if I had known, I would have ordered a more robust wine to match it. Then on to dessert. I had the Jewish Apple Cake which was scrumptious and my wife had the chocolate brownie. A nice end to a memorable meal.
They gave us a wonderful bubbly on the house for our anniversary. I knew the food would be stellar with the biscuit and dill oil whatever. The squid and shrimp small plates were out of this world. The service was fantastic (timing was perfect). Even the way they cleared the table in between "courses" was fantastic. The large plate wood oven pork chops was not as awesome as the small plates, but I still absolutely loved them!!! That's how good this restaurant is. James Beard, you didn't fail me! The desserts were also a steal for their price (the brownie and the rhubarb sorbet special). I now will have a hard time convincing myself to try a new restaurant for my next anniversary! What a first world problem. Vernick, you make Philadelphia proud! (And with very reasonable prices to boot!) I would consider giving you 5.5 -6 stars if possible. I thought I would be disappointed in the non-traditional small plate and large plate menu, wanting to be handheld with appetizers and clear-cut entrees, etc. But you've showed me that those rigid mental boundaries can be put aside and that I should cherish my freedom in planning my menu outside of the box and live a little! I loved how service was fast and courteous and everyone seemed to remember it was our anniversary!
The waitress kindly explained the menu to us (it's split up among vegetable, raw, small, large, and other plates) and when we made our selections, she easily suggested what plates should come out together and in what order, which showed how much she knew about the menu, because everything came out fantastic. We ordered six dishes and having just two come to the table at a time allowed us to enjoy each without feeling like we had to rush so our table wasn't overloaded with plates. The maryland crab toast was my favorite, but every dish was delicious and an appropriate serving. This meal definitely impressed me and I look forward to returning!
