I loved experiencing the Museum of the American Revolution, with its mix of professional high quality video, (not-corny) dioramas, rich displays, interesting artifacts and concise textual explanations. The most engaging museum that I have visited - ever. The exhibits flowed seamlessly one into another and the amount of information was just right - not overwhelming! What I liked the most? Several points of view were presented including the American revolutionaries, British, Native Americans, free and enslaved blacks, and women. Previously voiceless participants were given a voice in this museum experience! Also, the museum experience drove home the fact that revolutions are not neat and simple. They managed to capture and present memorable key points while also making clear that this was a complicated, messy revolution THAT IS STILL IN PROCESS. The promise of the American Revolution is still not yet realized. Awesome experience.
We think this long-awaited museum holds lots of promise and we'd like to come again when we can actually see and enjoy the exhibits.
1) The timed tickets don't seem to mean a thing. We got timed tickets while every tiny exhibit room was wall to wall with school groups preventing us from seeing anything.
2) Lots of wasted space.
The cafe, however, is excellent. One of the best museum cafes around.
As such it has a lot of kinks to work out.
Maybe a day for adults only.
The exhibits which are hard to see, are crammed into small rooms in a one-way horseshoe configuration.
What's the point?
Thought provoking learning experience for young and old alike. The movies and interactive exhibits are wonderful. The George Washington tent is a tremendous presentation and artifact. There is a great gift shop as well. This is a beautiful addition to the Independence Park experience!
Mainly:
Very cool place for anyone who enjoys history. This is an interactive museum full of surprises. There were people of all ages in attendance. It was interesting and the information was presented in an unusual manner. The staff was very knowledgeable and enjoyed engaging with the attendees. I highly recommend this museum. I will definitely visit again.
This museum is only about 6 months old.
The first floor is vast and cavernous with the entrance hall, a great museum store, cafeteria and theater.
While this museum is a very nice facility, as far as museums go it's extremely unremarkable. Save a few interesting artifacts, the exhibits are more focused on teaching rather than exhibiting. They contain tenfold more dioramas than actual artifacts, resulting in an appearance of historical fluff. This museum is great if you are completely unfamiliar with the revolution, and is an awesome learner opportunity for younger kids. It falls flat if you enjoy history and are at all familiar with the revolution. It does not provide any new or unique perspective, instead remaining relatively engrossed in the same narrative present at most first hand historical sights in the area. A trip to Independence hall, something as quaint as Washington's crossing, or any other primary historic site provides a much more in-depth learning opportunity. Again, the museum is great if you or your kid knows nothing about the inception of America, but with any degree of familiarity, the museum falls quite flat.
